SALE OF THE WEEK

Vanity Fair’s UK-based sales team pulled off a classy deal for Nicole Farhi in this month’s issue. Half way though a feature on Doris Day’s and Rock Hudson’s on-screen double act, the reader is treated to photographs of an attractive young couple. At first glance, the twosome appear to be part of the article but the pages can be pulled apart to reveal that they are models posing in a Nicole Farhi fashion spread. The credit for the ’barn door’ ad goes to Vanity Fair’s account manager Caroline Whitley who took the idea to Nicole Farhi’s agency representative, Manning Gottlieb Media director Hilary Taylor. ’It was very important to me that the advertisement went on a page where there were no other pictures, so it looked like part of the feature,’ explained Whitley, who was previously at Optimedia. ’Vanity Fair runs a maximum of 30 per cent advertising so it’s already a clutter-free environment. I just wanted to do something braver than the bog-standard double-page spread or gatefold.’
