More than 100,000 residential fires occur in South Korea each year, but despite new legislation requiring homes to have a fire extinguisher, 58% still do not.
Those who do, often store their extinguishers in hard to reach places or forget about it completely. To tackle this problem, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance made an ordinary flower vase that doubles as a throwable fire extinguisher. The vase is a piece of everyday home décor, but when it breaks open, potassium carbonate is released and starts a rapid cooling reaction that suppresses oxygen, putting out the fire. Between September and December 2018, the Firevase was distributed to 100,000 households in traditional Korean villages, markets and other fire-prone areas. Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance will be producing more of the product.
