Scales walks out as CEO of

Don Scales, the worldwide president and chief executive of, has left the company without a job to go to.

Scales resigned last week following strategic differences over its parent company Omnicom's decision to make part of the TBWA\Worldwide network (Campaign, 2 December).

Jeremy Pagden, the New York-based president and chief executive of the Omnicom-owned Tequila\Worldwide, will assume Scales' responsibilities on an interim basis. He is expected to make an announcement regarding a replacement in the next few weeks.

John Wren, the Omnicom chief executive, has long declared his intention to split the holding company into three integrated networks. However, discussions over moving financial and operational reporting lines from the US head office to local TBWA centres have meant that implementation of the plan has taken longer than expected.

Scales joined in February 2001 as a regional president, managing the digital agency's Dallas office. In 2003, he was promoted to lead the agency's North American operations, before being named president and chief operating officer.

Scales assumed the chief executive's role in July 2004, when the founder, Chan Suh, became the agency's chairman.

Before that, he was the group vice-president of industry services at Oracle and a senior vice-president of management consulting at EDS.
