Year in review

Havas Group Media upped sticks from Covent Garden to the new agency "Village" in Kings Cross, but in reality the change in senior personnel across the agencies has been more fundamental.

The French parent company admitted its media division suffered the "heaviest" impact when UK revenues tumbled last year.

Prolific tweeter Paul Frampton said goodbye after 20 years, leaving Matt Adams to run the media business beneath group boss Chris Hirst. Adams has overall responsibility for Team O2, too, since the exit of Ed Cox, while Group M high-fliers Sarah Treliving and Stephanie Marks took the reins at Arena Media and Havas Media respectively.

Add to that a whole raft of C-suite changes below the top layer and we’re left with a very different set of go-getters.

Work highlights include O2 – still the group’s sexiest client. Its "Oops" campaign was chosen as Campaign’s "best outdoor ad" of the year. Havas’ inaugural campaign for Beats in April was the most high-profile, however, with a sponsorship around a heavyweight boxing match featuring Anthony Joshua. Standout wins included Beats (media) and Nokia owner HMD (digital), but many of the biggest pitches seemed to be out of Havas Media’s grasp – a similar picture to last year.

What remains unknown is where the brand proposition now lies after Vivendi fully acquired Havas. Is Havas now the go-to agency group for content and entertainment? Can it compete with Group M and Omnicom (let alone Google and Facebook) for the best media talent that hungry clients crave? Lots of questions for the Village people to answer in 2018.
