Year in review

MediaCom, Britain’s biggest media agency, had a strong 2017, picking up the £106.5m PSA Group account, including Vauxhall, and being shortlisted for Media Agency of the Year at the Media Week Awards.

It produced some bold work, such as "Live from inside the human body", a live operation, broadcast on Channel 4 for Cancer Research UK, which became part of culture and delivered results.

Chief executive Josh Krichefski has continued to refresh his team, promoting Chris Binns and Steve Gladdis to joint chief strategy officers to replace Sue Unerman, who became chief transformation officer. Other notable appointments included Nancy Lengthorn as the first head of diversity in an agency that already has a reputation as a leader on this issue, thanks to the legacy of Karen Blackett, who is moving to become UK country manager of WPP.

Krichefski is trying to position MediaCom higher up the value chain. Blink_Innovation is working with tech companies to help clients on innovation, and Theobalds Road Consulting, led by head of consultancy Alice Fabre, is also looking at bigger business challenges.

MediaCom has also pushed initiatives on mindfulness and mental health to support staff, with churn falling to a 14-year low. The only significant setback was the loss of Procter & Gamble’s press-buying business as part of a consolidation.

The agency’s fortunes in 2018 are likely to depend heavily on its biggest client, Sky, which was due to complete its £300m UK media review, the first in 13 years, in April.
