The news that Saturday and Sunday's performances had been pulled was announced on Friday evening (25 July), hours after the company told ticket-holders on Facebook and Twitter that Friday's screening would also not be going ahead.

The Back to the Future experiences, which had been scheduled to run between 24 July and 31 August, will take place at an outdoor location near the Olympic Village in Stratford, east London. The company cancelled last weekend's performances (26-27 July), and has yet to confirm the go ahead of this week's performances.

Speaking to the BBC, Fabien Riggall, founder of Secret Cinema, said he had not been able to satisfy the local authority’s technical requirements. He added last week’s thunderstorms in the capital also hampered production efforts.

Riggall said: "We've built an ambitious show and we weren't able to get to the position in which we were able to open with the local authorities happy.

"I'm devastated that we didn't get there, but it won't stop me being ambitious. What it has taught us in a great way is that I'm never going to let this happen again."

In a separate interview, Riggall dismissed claims that the cancellations were due to health and safety scares, animal welfare or an unfinished set.

Secret Cinema has not officially confirmed when the screenings will begin, however ticket-holder Maeve O’Neill said on the company’s Facebook page: "At last you are taking some responsibility by emailing peeps [sic] and cancelling until July 31st."

More than 84,000 people have bought a ticket to the immersive film experience. Those who missed out on the preview and first four nights have been offered a refund, or entry into a screening in August.
