John Shaw, the co-managing director of Wunderman Cato Johnson, has
left the agency, citing disagreements over policy with the direct
marketing agency’s European boss, Helmut Matthies.
Shaw announced to his staff last Friday that he was to leave the

Shaw said: ’My role was to manage the company and if someone else is
doing that job, it undermines my role. (Matthies) was shocked when I

The UK business, whose clients include Ford, AA, Citibank and United
Airlines, will be run by David Butter, vice-president of WCJ Europe,
Richard Bagnall-Smith, client services director of WCJ London, and Gerry
Docherty, Shaw’s co-managing director, responsible for the Ford
business. This arrangement will stand for the foreseeable future.
Shaw will leave officially next week and is undecided as to his next
move. ’I’m talking to as many people as possible to find out what the
market is like. I’m interested in above-the-line agencies that offer a
wider range of services to secure more of a client’s budget.’
