John Shaw, the co-managing director of Wunderman Cato Johnson, has

left the agency, citing disagreements over policy with the direct

marketing agency’s European boss, Helmut Matthies.

Shaw announced to his staff last Friday that he was to leave the

agency.

He had worked there for nine years, spending six as managing

director.

Matthies was appointed managing director of WCJ Europe in May 1996,

having previously been the president of WCJ Germany.

Shaw said: ’My role was to manage the company and if someone else is

doing that job, it undermines my role. (Matthies) was shocked when I

told him of my resignation, but I would say that it is an amicable

arrangement.’

Matthies said: ’From time to time, individual management visions go in

different directions. I respect John enormously, but we have to agree to

disagree.’

Shaw declined to outline any of the policy disagreements, saying only:

’I have been there for nine years and felt it was time to move on.’

The UK business, whose clients include Ford, AA, Citibank and United

Airlines, will be run by David Butter, vice-president of WCJ Europe,

Richard Bagnall-Smith, client services director of WCJ London, and Gerry

Docherty, Shaw’s co-managing director, responsible for the Ford

business. This arrangement will stand for the foreseeable future.

Shaw will leave officially next week and is undecided as to his next

move. ’I’m talking to as many people as possible to find out what the

market is like. I’m interested in above-the-line agencies that offer a

wider range of services to secure more of a client’s budget.’
