Sigur Ros to commandeer YouTube homepage

LONDON - Icelandic rock quartet Sigur Ros are to take over video portal YouTube's global and UK homepage tomorrow, as part of a promotion for the critically acclaimed band's 'Heima' DVD documentary.

The band will become the first music act to screen an entire documentary on the site from tomorrow, and band members will choose 10 videos to be screened on the YouTube homepage for a 24-hour period.

Sigur Ros released 'Heima' in the autumn, and the DVD features footage from the band's live performances as well as outdoor shots from across Iceland.

YouTube's decision to give the Icelandic band further exposure follows the website's fan competition to post their own user generated content videos based on tracks from Sigur Ros's most successful album to date, 'Takk'.

The 10 best videos were chosen by the band and are being shown on a designated Sigur Ros site on YouTube, and will be screened alongside the 'Heima' documentary from tomorrow.

Sigur Ros have previously had tracks from 'Takk' used in commercials and programme soundtracks. The band's biggest single, 'Hoppipolla', was used as the soundtrack to the BBC's 'Planet Earth' series, as well as the broadcaster's World Cup and FA Cup coverage in 2006.

Georg Holm, Sigur Ros band member, said: "Like all Icelanders we are intensely proud of our mighty homeland in the far North Atlantic.

"It is in our Viking blood to want to conquer nations and peoples, but our longboat was in the repair shop having the barnacles removed, so we just made a film to send out into the world on our behalf instead.

"It turned out all right in the end, and lots of people have already enjoyed it. Now it's your turn, and a special thanks to everyone who entered the Minn Heima competition."
