Simon Barnes has left his job as managing director of Associated

Newspapers’ contract publishing division, Unique Solutions in

Publishing.

Barnes has worked for Associated for more than 20 years. He climbed the

sales ranks to become ad director of the Daily Mail, before being put in

charge of the contract arm in December 1998.

His departure late last week came as something of a shock to insiders

who said USP has landed several lucrative contracts in recent

months.

’We had a disagreement over the future,’ said Barnes, ’and it was

important enough to all of us that we decided to do the future

separately.’

Barnes declined to go into detail and was keen to stress that he still

has a real passion for USP and Associated. He said he had ’enormous

confidence in the talent at both organisations and in the potential for

the future’.

He added that he was involved in ’a few conversations’ about his future

but had yet to take any decisions. Insiders at Associated speculated

that he would not stay out of the fray for long, and that he would

possibly appear at another contract publisher in the coming weeks.

USP’s most recent project was a 40-page web directory. It had a print

run of more than 6.5 million and went out in all three Associated

titles.
