Sony blows eight million petals through village for 4K TV spot

Sony has released a TV ad resembling the acclaimed "balls" spot to promote its 4K televisions.

The minute-long spot airs today (1 November) and shows a volcano full of petals exploding to a folksy sound track ("Berlin" by RY X). The petals then blow down a mountainside and through a quiet Costa Rican village, as the voiceover expounds the benefits of Sony’s 4K televisions.

An estimated eight million petals were used the "volcano" ad, which was filmed without using special effects.

The campaign will run throughout Europe until the end of December across TV, press and digital platforms. Selected 4K cinema screenings of 'Thor' and 'The Hobbit' will also run the ad. The media spend behind the campaign was not disclosed.

The work was created by McCann London. It was written by Arman Naji, who also art directed the project with Michael Thomason and Javier Gomez. Jaron Albertin directed the spot through Smuggler.

The ad is similar in style to Sony’s "balls" campaign, which was created by Fallon in 2005 and showed hundreds of thousands of brightly-coloured bouncy balls tumbling down a hilly San Francisco street.

Gildas Pelliet, Sony Europe’s head of marketing said: "Sony is famous for creating iconic commercials. We wanted to create a visually impressive and artistic advert that best demonstrates what you experience with a Sony 4K TV - 4 times the detail of current Full HD TVs.

"The ad has a cinema like experience with pin sharp images and dramatic scenery."

McCann’s previous work for Sony includes its nostalgic campaign selling the brand’s Experia Z smartphone. The ad featured a new mix of David Bowie’s 'Sound and Vision', which was later released as a single.
