Staples reviews £5m accounts after merger

Staples, the US-based office supplier that recently merged with its UK rival Globus Office World, is putting its £5 million creative and media accounts up for review.

The company has approached agencies directly and is expected to hold pitches this autumn. Four incumbents - RPM3 and Zenith Optimedia, which hold the Staples accounts, and Maher Bird Associates and John Ayling & Associates, which handle the advertising and media for the Office World brand - have been asked to re-pitch.

A Staples spokesman said: "Following the acquisition of Office World by Staples, Staples is reviewing its advertising and media agencies. This process will be completed by the end of the year."

Staples completed its purchase of Globus Office World in August this year. The deal, worth £32.5 million, added 59 Office World outlets to Staples' existing 95 UK stores. According to Nielsen Media Research, the two brands combined spent £5.2 million on ads in the past 12 months.

Staples launched in the US in 1986. It opened its first European office in 1992, and the first UK store opened in Swansea in 1993.
