Steve Cooper takes over as managing director at WTCS

Walsh Trott Chick Smith has hired the former Lowe Howard-Spink board director Steve Cooper to take over as the managing director of the agency from the departing Kier Cooper.

Kier Cooper will leave the agency early next month for an as-yet unspecified start-up project. He resigned in January but stayed at the agency in an unsuccessful bid to bed down the Channel 5 business, following the arrival of the new marketing director, David Pullan.

Steve Cooper takes over as the managing director with immediate effect, and will handle the day-to-day running of the agency, freeing its four partners for new business initiatives and more strategic roles. The move to establish a second tier of management beneath Amanda Walsh, Dave Trott, Murray Chick and Gordon Smith began in June last year with the appointment of Nick Wray as the agency's creative director, reporting to Trott and Smith. Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper's former deputy planning director, Polly Evelegh, arrived at WTCS in January as the planning director, reporting to Chick.

Steve Cooper spent 13 years at Lowe, including a stint as the general manager of the integrated unit, Lowe & Partners. He left for Ammirati Puris Lintas in 1999, taking a job as a board account director on Rover, but was later merged back into Lowe following the loss of the business.

He joins WTCS from Chime, where he was the chief executive of the short-lived Web Marketing unit. He has since run the network's Interactive Bureau.
