TBWA poaches CIA financial director

TBWA/London has poached CIA UK's group financial director, Pippa

Smith, to be the commercial director of the network's UK group.

Smith, who left CIA a fortnight ago after 18 months with the agency,

will join TBWA this week, reporting directly to the northern European

president and chairman of European management, Paul Bainsfair.

Smith will be responsible for the strategic development of TBWA's UK

operations, which include TBWA/London as well as fellow London agency

Maher Bird Associates, the Manchester-based BDH TBWA and the

below-the-line operation TBWA/ GGT. She will take control of the group's

financial management and will hold the reporting reins of the

operations' financial departments.

'It's an expanded role for me,' Smith said. 'I'll be responsible for

financial management but also looking at commercial issues for the

group, such as acquisitions.'

Smith spent five years as the group financial director of New PHD before

being brought over to CIA by the new chief executive, David Wheldon, in

October 1999.

'She's a top signing, a tremendously well-respected financial person in

the ad industry,' Bainsfair said.

Smith's arrival coincides with the appointment of Trevor Beattie and

Garry Lace as the chairman and chief executive of the London agency. The

appointments followed the news that the chief executive, Simon Clemmow,

and the joint managing director, Johnny Hornby, would be leaving to form

their own agency (Campaign, 4 May).
