Tip for the top: How you look

In every batch of applicants for a job, there's always one (at least) who pitches up for the interview dressed with all the sartorial subtleness of a poor man's Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen. It's a cliche, but first impressions count and there aren't many jobs, even in advertising, where a wacky personal style is top of the interviewer's wishlist.

Dress for success

- Keep your appearance on the right side of smart. Even "creatives" need to look like they know how to scrub up for a client meeting or a pitch.

- Tone down the body piercing and jewellery if at all possible; chav is rather a popular term among planners these days.

- Remember the things your mum used to nag about: clean hair, tidy hands and don't forget behind the ears.

- Whatever your appearance, make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed.
