Universal takes on BSkyB’s Kite for key Euro research post

Universal McCann Worldwide has poached Jim Kite, BSkyB’s head of

research, for the new post of European research director.

Kite is the first key appointment made by the Universal McCann

Worldwide’s managing director, Robin Kent, since he took over from

Murray Dudgeon in January.

Dudgeon left Universal after 18 years to become managing director of the

radio station, Classic FM.

Kite will be responsible for developing Universal Worldwide’s research

centre in London. His tasks will include building a research team and

working with the directors of research at Universal offices across

Europe.

The role will also call for Kite to take on a global brief, working for

McCann-Erickson and Universal clients worldwide.

At BSkyB, Kite had been in charge of the research department since

January 1993.

He had specific duties for digital television and was closely involved

in the Channel 5 franchise bid.

Kite said: ’I’m moving from the top job in television research to the

top European role in media research. With my knowledge of multi-channel

TV and fragmentation, I’m ideally placed to explain the opportunities

advertisers face in the coming decade.’

Kent said: ’His understanding of TV and where it is going will give us a

real edge.’

He added: ’It is a role Universal has recognised to be key to our

development.

We wanted to put a person in place a year ago, but we have looked very

hard and it has taken us this long.’
