Valentine's Day generates £334m in sales

British consumers will spend an estimated £334.3m on Valentine's Day gifts this year, according to Verdict Research, the retail arm of business information company Datamonitor.

The most lucrative sectors for marketers are the lovers' staples – flowers, chocolates and jewellery.

Britons are expected to spend £107.2m on flowers, £55.4m on chocolates, £89.1m on jewellery, while £82.5m will go on "other gifts".

Earlier this month, toy manufacturer Mattel launched a digital Valentine's campaign to re-unite Barbie and Ken.

Last Friday, Valentine's fever took hold of the British press, which was loaded with offers from all major food retailers in preparation for today.
