Ok, so they didn’t actually land Father Christmas on the plane, but passengers aboard flight VS11 yesterday found the plane had been kitted out with technology so they could track the elusive present-giver.

As part of Virgin Atlantic #FestiveFlights campaign, the partnered with Microsoft to create the illusion that Father Christmas landed on top of the plane mid-flight, before coming aboard to greet the passengers.

Each person was handed a Windows tablet computer which meant they could track Father Christmas and chat to him online during the flight. The landing was revealed to passengers via projections on the roof of the carriages.

Fred Warren, creative director of Microsoft Connected Digital Services, commented: "The chance to create the first 4D experience in flight for passengers where technology was the enabler of bringing Christmas to life was a fantastic opportunity for Microsoft.  Co-creating this concept with Virgin Atlantic has been unique as we adapted the technology to deliver a true Virgin Atlantic brand experience".

Throughout the flight passengers also took part in competitions to win special prizes such as Dell and Lenovo products.

Microsoft has also created an online experience which allows people to track the whereabouts of Santa Claus called Norad Santa.
