W&K and Universal land BASF accounts

BASF, the chemicals giant, has appointed Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam and Universal McCann to handle its global advertising and media planning and buying accounts respectively.

W&K Amsterdam scooped the global creative account following a three-way pitch against DDB and Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, while Universal McCann beat MindShare to the media business in a final shoot-out.

Their appointments bring an end to the ten-month review process, handled by Agency Insight.

W&K Amsterdam will take on responsibility for all of BASF's above-the-line communications, including its first global brand campaign that will run across Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America.

The campaign will also include tactical regional executions for the chemical company's 14 divisions, including Plastics, Performance Products (tailor-made plastics), Oil and Gas, and Agricultural Products and Nutrition.
