The Week: Advertising News - Charity calls for ad ban

The British Heart Foundation has called for a total ban on all junk-food advertising, as part of a proposed new regulatory system.

The call, which comes as part of the charity's "Food4Thought" campaign, argues that the existing Committee of Advertising Practice Code is flawed because it was not developed with the purpose of promoting health and does not cover non-broadcast media. It has drawn up a new system based on the idea that "individuals and organisations must not act in a way where the purpose or effect is to promote an unhealthy food product to individuals under the age of 16". It also wants a body independent of the advertising industry to enforce the new system.
