The Week: Advertising News - OTC painkillers in spotlight

A new warning could be applied to over-the-counter painkillers containing codeine, if an application by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency is accepted.

The new restrictions would mean that ads for drugs such as Nurofen Plus would have to carry the warning: "Can cause addiction. For three days' use only." In addition, ads will only be able to claim that the drugs can relieve acute-to-moderate pain rather than assisting with coughs and colds, while references to painkilling power will no longer be allowed.
