The Week: Advertising news - Supermarkets ditch celebs

UK supermarkets are shifting their advertising strategies away from campaigns featuring celebrities in favour of price promotions.

Asda has frozen its adspend at last year's £51 million, and will not commission any more celebrity ads for its current campaign, which features Victoria Wood, Ian Wright and Julie Walters. Tesco also has no plans to use celebrities this year, while Waitrose plans to promote its strategy of matching Sainsbury's prices on up to 100 products.
