The Week: Brand News - BA brand image tarnished

British Airways' brand image has suffered far more damage than its rival Virgin Atlantic Airways' following the recent fuel surcharge scandal, according to BrandIndex, the YouGov consumer perception tracker.

British Airways' brand metric, judged on daily interviews with 2,000 people, dropped 21 points two days after the news broke that it had been fined £270 million for price fixing. Virgin Atlantic, its co-conspirator, escaped a fine as a result of deciding to blow the whistle on the affair. Virgin Atlantic only slipped three points, according to the same BrandIndex measure.
