The Week: Media News - Airey squares up to Grade

Dawn Airey, the chairman and chief executive of Five, went head to head with Michael Grade, the executive chairman of ITV, over retaining the Contract Rights Renewal mechanism, at a House of Lords communications committee hearing last week.

Airey reiterated the broadcaster's request that CRR stays in place while ITV holds a dominant position, with a 46 per cent share of the commercial TV market. Grade argued that CRR was "neutral" for its competitors, but the rules forced ITV to invest in shows that had better ratings rather than programmes with smaller, higher quality audiences.
