The Week: Media news - BBC queries ITV news costs

A new regional news service on ITV will cost less than predicted, according to the BBC, which is keen to avoid its licence fee being spent on the venture.

BBC officials said that Ofcom estimates that a basic service could cost between £40 million and £60 million a year and a fuller service up to £100 million were wide of the mark. The BBC estimates that the service would cost between £30 million and £50 million.
