The Week: Media News - BBC Radio 2 tactics blasted

BBC Radio 2's "obsession with youth" is proving disastrous for commercial competitors, according to RadioCentre, the trade body for commercial station owners.

The strongest-growing section of Radio 2's audience is 15- to 34-year-olds, which is up by 62 per cent in ten years, according to figures complied by RadioCentre and submitted as part of a complaint to the BBC's regulator, the BBC Trust. Andrew Harrison, the chief executive of RadioCentre, said that Radio2, which has invested in high-profile presenters such as Jonathan Ross and Chris Evans, has markedly shifted its programming policies towards a younger audience.
