The Week: Media news - BSkyB signs Sony deal

British Sky Broadcasting has signed a new deal with Sony Pictures extending its exclusive television and online rights to broadcast films from the company's back catalogue.

The deal means that movies such as Spider-Man 3 and The Da Vinci Code will continue to be available on the broadcaster's recently revamped Sky Movies channels, as well as on its Sky Anytime service.

This allows Sky+ and Sky HD customers access to the films at any time. They will also be available on Sky Box Office on a pay-per-view basis.

Lisa McDonald, the controller of acquisitions for Sky Movies and Sky Box Office, negotiated the deal with Danny Goldman, the senior vice-president for sales at Sony Pictures.
