The Week: Media news - Cinemagoers on the rise

The effect of the recession combined with the success of blockbuster films such as Star Trek and Watchmen has helped the UK cinema industry record its highest quarterly figures since 2002.

Latest box-office data has revealed that ticket sales for the first half of 2009 grew to 83.4 million, with June alone seeing 12.5 million cinema tickets being sold, a year-on-year increase of more than 5 per cent.
