The Week: Media News - Govt plots broadband spend

The Government plans to use £250 million of underspend from the BBC's digital switchover scheme to bring broadband to everyone in Britain.

In last week's Budget statement, the Chancellor, Alistair Darling, reiterated the aim to introduce broadband for all, but failed to confirm specific funding or roll-out plans. The first step will see £100 million being used to fund a broadband pilot in South Yorkshire. Separately, Darling revealed government plans to review Ofcom's powers and duties.
