The Week: Media news - Prison radio gets go-ahead

The Government has backed a £2 million scheme to launch a national radio station that will broadcast in prisons.

The station, which will not have a commercial offering, will be launched by a partnership between the Prison Radio Association, a charity backed by the Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow, and the Ministry of Justice, headed by Jack Straw. A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said the creation of the station would allow the prison service to "communicate messages and educational programmes".
