The Week: Media news - Radio 'encourages drinking'

A government-funded report has accused commercial radio stations of encouraging binge-drinking among young people.

Radio stations including Kerrang!, Galaxy, Kiss and BBC Radio 1 were sampled by researchers at the University of the West of England, who claimed that they had heard 700 on-air references to drinking between December 2007 and February of this year. Of these references, 73 per cent were considered to promote drinking, with Kerrang! Radio singled out as the worst offender for "encouraging excessive drinking".
