The Week: Media news - Regionals staff levels fall

Around 10 per cent of people working at regional newspapers have lost their jobs in the past six months, according to reports.

The figure, which amounts to between 3,500 and 4,000 workers, is said to be a result of a 37 per cent drop in ad revenues across the industry. In reaction to the news, the National Union of Journalists has taken out a full-page ad in The Guardian urging readers to "help keep local newspapers alive" by encouraging their MPs to sign an early day motion.
