The Week: Media news - Social networks on the rise

Around two-thirds of the global online population now spends time on social network and blogging sites such as Facebook and MySpace, a new report by Nielsen has revealed.

The figure means that the social networks category accounts for almost 10 per cent of all time spent on the internet, making it the fourth most popular online sector. The social network and blogging audience is also becoming more diverse in terms of age, with the biggest increase in visitors to the sites during 2008 coming from the 35- to 49-year-old age group.
