Roger Alton, the former editor of The Observer, is in talks to replace Simon Kelner as the editor of The Independent, according to reports.

Kelner is likely to be promoted to a senior management role as part of the move after Terry Grote, the managing director of The Independent and The Independent on Sunday, retired in May. Alton left The Observer after nearly ten years as the editor at the end of last year. The Independent on Sunday has also hired James Hanning as its deputy editor, replacing John Mullin, who was promoted to edit the paper in January. Hanning has been at The Independent on Sunday since 2003, when he joined from the Evening Standard. He has been working as the executive editor, comment. Lisa Markwell, the features editor at Easy Living, has also been hired as the executive editor to lead arts and features coverage.
