The Week: People News - Alton quits as Observer ed

Roger Alton, the award-winning editor of The Observer, has resigned.

He will be stepping down at the end of the year after spending nearly a decade in the role. The paper's deputy editor, John Mulholland, will replace him. Alton has overseen the introduction of popular magazine supplements including The Observer Sport and Food Monthlies, as well as the redesign to the Berliner format. His departure follows that of Kamal Ahmed, a senior executive at The Observer and its former political editor, and comes amid speculation of rising tension between The Observer and its sister publication The Guardian over the papers' opposing stances on the Iraq conflict.
