The News Corporation chairman and chief executive, Rupert Murdoch, has warned that newspapers will need to start charging for their online content in order to survive.

Meanwhile, the Guardian Media Group is attempting to curb spending in other areas, with the editor-in-chief of Guardian News & Media, Alan Rusbridger, opting to take a 10 per cent pay cut, while the GMG chief executive, Carolyn McCall, is waiving her personal performance bonus for 2008-9.
