The World: Amsterdam - Mecom takeover bid accepted by Wegener

Mecom, the British media investment company, has made a bid for Wegener, the Dutch regional newspaper company, in which it already has a 23.7 per cent stake.

The size of the bid, which has been accepted by Wegener's management, has not been disclosed. Mecom already owns two regional newspapers in the South of Holland.

In addition to its regional paper interests, Wegener also publishes the national newspaper Algemeen Dagblad in a joint venture with PCM Publishers, as well as local freesheets. The company's sales totalled EUR668 million last year.

Mecom acquired its stake in Wegener earlier this year from Telegraaf Media Groep, from which it had already acquired a couple of regional newspapers.
