The World: Beijing - State news service to broadcast to Europe in English

Xinhua News, China's government-sponsored news agency, is set to launch an English-language news programme in Europe.

The broadcaster will air 90 minutes of current events news on screens in supermarkets and around embassies across the continent in an effort to improve China's image.

Programmes are expected to consist of ten-minute news clips and half-hour lifestyle features, focusing on issues and events that are happening throughout the country.

The deal, which is said to have been struck with about a dozen European broadcasters, follows an announcement made by the Chinese broadcaster CCTV earlier this year that it would bolster its programming across Europe to encourage a wider range of viewers.
