The World: Caracas - Leaders of South America launch TV channel

The president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, and a group of South American governments are launching a continent-wide commercial TV station.

Telesu, which has left-wing leanings and will show a combination of news, documentaries and sports programming from across South America, has been set up in a bid to offer viewers an alternative to the corporate-owned news channels such as CNN and Fox.

The governments of Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay will share the initial cost of running the station, with an aim to find commercial sponsors to assume the long-term funding of the venture.
