The World: Detroit - General Motors cuts 20 per cent of marketing staff

General Motors is cutting 20 per cent of its marketing and communications staff, as part of a number of lay-offs that will see it trim 1,600 white-collar jobs.

The company, which owns brands including Chevrolet, Saab and Vauxhall, has been forced to make the cuts in order to meet the federal government's June deadline for it to restructure or face bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, Chrysler, the other US car-maker trying to avoid bankruptcy, has been dealt a blow as Fiat, a potential investor, reported a loss for the first quarter of 2009.
