The World: Dublin - BCI prepares Irish radio market for expansion

The Broadcast Commission of Ireland is set to release additional radio licences, opening the way to significant expansion in the radio market in the republic.

An increase in spectrum availability will see up to eight additional stations, planned for launch over the next three years. They will vary in size from Dublin-based stations, through county-wide stations to a second national commercial station projected to cover 85 per cent of the population. Each is expected to have a target audience of at least 75,000 listeners.

The Irish radio audience is split equally between RTE, the state-owned broadcaster, and the 28 commercial stations already in existence.
