The World: Madrid - Burger King pulls ad after complaints from Hindus

A poster ad for Burger King that depicted a revered Indian goddess poised to eat a "forbidden" Whopper burger has been pulled after Hindus around the world complained that the spot denigrated their religion.

The ad, which was displayed in three local Spanish stores, showed a picture of Lakshmi, the Indian goddess of wealth, placed above one of the beef burgers, which Hindus are forbidden from eating.

A strapline reads "La merienda es sagrada", meaning "the snack is sacred".

Burger King quickly withdrew the posters and issued an apology following protests from Hindu world leaders.
