The World: Moscow - Russian government in calls for tobacco ad ban

Russia's cabinet has called for a total ban on tobacco advertising in a country where 60 per cent of men and 30 per cent of women are smokers.

The cabinet has approved a draft law which, if approved by the parliament, would allow Russia to ratify the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

All signatories are obliged to ban all tobacco advertising and tobacco sponsorship within five years of signing.

Tobacco-related diseases last year killed about 400,000 people in Russia, which has already banned billboard advertising for tobacco.
