He joins from Orchard Advertising, where he is credited with growing the agency's revenues almost five-fold during his seven-year tenure.
Arvind Sharma, the chairman of the India Subcontinent for Burnett, described Mukherjee's new role as "a natural progression" for him. His arrival would enable the agency to capitalise on the opportunities offered by the growth of the Indian economy, he added.
Mukherjee said: "My first priority will to hep further strengthen Burnetts' reputation of driving client business through outstanding creative."
