The World: Munich - Axel Springer purchase of ProSiebenSat.1 blocked

Germany's cartel office has blocked the proposed acquisition of the broadcasting group ProSiebenSat.1 by Axel Springer.

Ulrich Boge, the head of the cartel office, objected to the deal and said he would not allow it to go through because it would give Axel Springer a dominant position across both the television and print sectors.

Boge said the deal would take competition out of the market, with just two companies - Axel Springer, which owns a number of newspapers and magazines, and the Bertelsmann Group, which owns RTL and Gruner & Jahr - owning the lion's share of the market.

The cartel office has given both parties time to respond to its objections.
