The World: New York - Private consortium take control of Univision

A consortium of five private equity firms has bought Univision Communications, the largest Spanish-language media group in the US, for $13.7 billion.

The group outbid another consortium led by the Mexican media giant Grupo Televisa, a Univision shareholder and its biggest programme supplier.

The acquisition was for public shares.

It is not yet clear what will happen to Grupo Televisa's 11 per cent stake in the company.

The Saban Capital Group, an investment firm specialising in media and entertainment that already owns the German television network ProSieben, led the acquisition.

The other members of the consortium are: Madison Dearborn Partners, Providence Equity Partners, Texas Pacific Group and Thomas H Lee Partners.
