World online set for UK launch.

Dutch internet company World Online is appealing for customers to help shape the content of its new internet and e-commerce service for the UK, which goes live next month.

Already a global player, World Online is a market leader in South Africa and several European countries, where it provides telecoms and internet services.

UK subscribers will be able to suggest content for the ISP's portal through an online developers' forum, and have the choice between a free, "light" ISP service and a more substantial, paid-for service. "The way we approach the market with our offerings will be completely different from other internet companies," said Laurence Alexander, sales and marketing director at World Online UK, who joined from mobile communications company Simoco.

The company says the service will also deliver personalised content to customers over mobile phones such as share price updates or weather forecasts, after striking a deal to a deal with a Short Message Service (SMS) provider.

Each area of the portal - which contains sections on finance, entertainment, sport, music and travel - will run a monthly competition.

World Online is backing the launch with a #12 million marketing campaign for the next year, although it will be advertising online only until February the developers' forum moulds the content.
