The World: Prague - Change in law opens way for new digital broadcasts

The Czech government has given the go-ahead for a change in the country's media laws, which will allow six new TV companies to begin digital terrestrial broadcasts.

Until now, their activities have been blocked by the existing commercial TV stations, Nova and Prima, which have gone to court to protect themselves.

The amendment also proposes that the local public TV service, Ceska televize be able to continue broadcasting ads after next January, something the current legislation does not allow for.

The price of TV advertising in the Czech Republic is rising faster than in any other European Union state because Nova and Prima have a duopoly.
