The World: Sydney - The Seven Network lambasts newspaper board

The Seven Network, the Australian TV broadcaster, has made a stinging attack on the board of West Australian Newspapers, of which it is the largest shareholder.

Kerry Stokes, the Seven Network chairman, said he was "appalled" by the lack of leadership from the WAN board and has requested an extraordinary general meeting to remove all of its non-executive directors.

In a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange, Stokes said: "It is the only major media company in Australia forced to reduce its dividend payment, even against a strong local economy."

However, Peter Mansell, the WAN chairman, claimed directors were concerned about Seven's representation on WAN's board because of significant conflicts of interest.
