The World: Washington - FDA set to gain regulatory control on tobacco

The US Senate has passed a landmark vote that will give the Food and Drug Administration complete regulatory control over the $150 billion tobacco industry.

The new laws would enable the FDA to enforce tobacco companies to reveal for the first time all the ingredients in their products, and would help impose even stricter regulations on advertising and marketing.

New restrictions would include a ban on all outdoor tobacco advertising within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds, and a ban on all remaining tobacco-brand sponsorships of sports and entertainment events.
