The World: Washington - Univision fined as FCC backs BMP acquisition

The Federal Communications Commission has approved a $12 billion deal to take Univision private. But only after the Spanish media giant agreed to pay $24 million to settle charges that its stations aired soap operas as children's shows in violation of its programming obligations.

The fine, the biggest ever imposed by the FCC, followed challenges to licence renewals for Univision's Cleveland and San Francisco stations by the Office of Communications of the United Church of Christ and the National Hispanic Media Coalition.

With the approval, the five companies making up the Broadcasting Media Partners are expected to make the acquisition of Univision final.
